Climate Change Adaptation Seminar Unveiled
Date: (30-03-2015)
After successful conduction of the seminar "Visualizing Implication of Climate Change on Military Activities and Relationships" in 2013, its successor "Building Resiliency and Decreasing Vulnerability through Climate Change Adaptation" was unveiled on 30 March 2015. Commodore Mihaylov, director of the Operations and Training Directorate - Bulgarian MOD, formally opened the seminar in Triaditza Hall at Grand Hotel Sofia. The event brings together flag-level representatives of governmental bodies from several NATO countries and 4 PfP nations. It is hosted again by CMDR COE and organized in partnership with the U.S. European Command.
This year's agenda is built upon ideas presented during the CMDR COE annual seminar held in July 2014 by examining potential responses and solutions to extreme weather events recently experienced throughout South-Eastern Europe. The highlight of this 3-day seminar will be an interactive table-top exercise (TTX) that presents a regional flooding scenario. The participants (including decision-makers and technical experts representing civil authorities, military, academia, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations) will be asked to make decisions based on inputs regarding meteorology, forecasts, hydrology, and economic and political activity. The TTX will use simple water and economic models so that players can see the impact of their decisions. It will encourage information-sharing by presenting circumstances designed to encourage players to consider when to consult their regional partners and broker information exchanges. Benefits of the seminar will include an increased understanding of roles, responsibilities and capabilities of flood response stakeholders, as well as the opportunity to "test" national response plans in a facilitated regional scenario.
This high-rank event takes place from March 30th to April 1st, 2015 in the Triaditza hall of Grand Hotel Sofia.
