Security, Resilience and Digital Twins are the Highlights of the 26th World GIS Day
Leading Experts from the European Commission and Esri Arrive in Sofia
Sofia, October 21, 2025 – On November 19, Bulgaria will celebrate the 26th World Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day with a large-scale conference under the motto “GIS Connects Everything, Everywhere for a More Sustainable World”. The forum is taking place at the Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia and is organized by Esri Bulgaria in partnership with 70 leading business, academic, non-governmental and media organizations.
The special guest speaker at the prestigious forum is Dr. Bruno Combal, Policy Manager at the Directorate-General for Environment of the European Commission (EC). He will present the European Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, as well as the Habitats Directive and the NATURA 2000 network.
Arkadius Sadkowski, Global Manager of Reality Mapping Solutions at Esri, is also coming to Bulgaria especially for GIS Day. He will present the latest technological trends in using GIS to create realistic and "living" digital twins.
In parallel with the conference, a virtual exhibition will be opened with the projects from the National Educational Competition "Studying the World with GIS", under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and Science. The best interactive lessons and story maps created by teachers, students, undergraduates and doctoral candidates will be awarded at an official ceremony that evening.
Participation in the World GIS Day conference is free of charge. Pre-registration is required.
