Online International Conference Addressing global challenges: NATO′s approach to climate change, 17 November 2021

An international conference dedicated to NATO’s response to the global challenges, namely to the climate change, was held on 17 November 2021 in hybrid mode (in the premises of the NATO Crisis Management and Disaster Response Centre of Excellence (CMDR COE) and virtually through WebEx platform but also broadcasted on YouTube). The conference was co-organized by Sofia Security Forum (SSF) and CMDR COE, with the kind sponsorship of NATO Public Diplomacy Division.
Main goal of the event was to provide a forum for discussions on the need of prompt and decisive response of NATO and the Allies to climate change. During the conference, it was reconfirmed that climate change is one of the defining challenges of the present times and a threat multiplier that affects Allied security, both in the Euro-Atlantic area and in the Alliance’s broader range. Therefore, NATO needs to increase its awareness and develop effective adaptation and mitigation measures while ensuring a credible deterrence and defence posture, with a focus put on the safety of its military personnel.
The audience have had the privilege to exchange views and ask questions to such a distinguished briefers and Panelists like the current NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, Mr. James Appathurai; one of his predecessors, Mr. Jamie Shea; the Deputy Director General, European Union Military Staff (EUMS), Lt. Gen. Giovanni Manione; the Head of the United Nations Liaison Office for Peace and Security (UNLOPS), Mr. Rory Keane; other civilian and military executives; climate and security experts; representatives from non-governmental organizations, think-tanks, and the academia.
