13th NATO Computer Assisted Exercise Forum (NATO CAX Forum 2018)

The 13th NATO Computer Assisted Exercise Forum (NATO CAX Forum 2018) was conducted from 25 to 27 September 2018 in Sofia (BGR), The venue gathered more than 180 participants from 22 countries, 34 organizations and companies and 13 governmental bodies.
The successful event has been organized by the NATO Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) in cooperation with the NATO Crisis Management and Disaster Response Centre of Excellence (CMDR COE).
The Forum was supported by Bulgarian Ministry of defense, Sofia municipality, Leonardo and Anticyp companies. In addition, companies - CAE, MASA, Bonemia Interactive, Pitch, 4CStrategies, BULSIM and M&S COE delivered demonstrations on booths. The Forum focused mainly on technical items and operating procedures related to simulation-based exercises and training support, in order to promote the exchange of information and best practices among the Staffs of NATO and National simulation/training centers.
Addressees coming from Military Organizations, Academia and Industry as well participated by providing presentations on the CAX related topics on Future of Simulations, CAX as a Service, Exercise Environment, Cyber CAX, Training and Exercises, M&S For Decision Making Support, Industry Tools In Support of CAX, Game Based Application For CAX and M&S Supporting Analysis.
The program of the Forum also included other sessions to deeper discusses important aspects of M&S for exercises. The most important one for the year 2018 edition is that the NATO Command Structure Adaptation process has included important modification that will give more relevance to M&S for training, for operational analysis and warfare development.
In his opening speech the Deputy Minister of Defence, Atanas Zapryanov and Deputy Chief of Defence LTG Dimitar Iliev stressed that “So far, simulation in military training was always given in a methodological manner. The issue is to optimize the methods and set the right objectives. Computer Assisted Exercises (CAX) methodology is a pretty good example of how a methodological use of simulation encourages training audience to understand the vulnerabilities and strong points of their activities.”
The event was closed by the Director of the M&S COE Captain NAVY Vincenzo Milano with gratitude to the hosts and announced the venue of the next CAX Forum in Paris, France from 24th to 26th September 2019.
