Disaster Response and Consequence Management for a Radiological Incident
Date: (28-04-2023)
The crisis management and disaster responses are one complex area that requires a perfect alignment of emergency preparedness. Responding to a crisis at any level, especially radiation, is a very complex and stressful situation that requires not only the "whole of government" approach but also a "unified and synchronized" NATO and the national approach in compliance with building resilience. So that was the idea of the recent event held at CMDR COE.
The pilot course of the Disaster Response and Consequence Management for a Radiological Incident has been successfully completed. The Centre together with the United States Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Incident Policy and Cooperation (NIPC) and with the support of the JCBRN COE and the EADRC trained international military and civil experts with special equipment for detecting radiological materials and dealing with these threats to ensure public safety. The practical part of the course was executed at the Musachevo CBRN training area. The participants were able to practice what they had learned using protective equipment. The theoretical part focused on response objectives and monitoring and sampling strategies and lessons learned from past incidents such as Fukushima.
