EADRCC Exercise "SRBIJA 2018" Lessons Identified Conference

EADRCC Exercise

Date: (29-01-2019)

The Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) and CMDR COE held a post-exercise Lessons Identified Conference from 29 to 31 January 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria. It regarded the consequence management command-post and field exercise "SRBIJA 2018" (8 -11 Oct 2018).

In line with the aims of the exercise, the objectives of the conference were to identify and share observations with particular regard to the support to national authorities in building resilience through improved disaster preparedness, planning, prevention and response, and strengthening their capability to manage potential civil emergencies. Additionally the event focused on topics related to the EADRCC procedures and capabilities for improving collaboration during a consequence management operation, including response to chemical, biological or radiological incidents.

This stock-taking conference has gathered more than 80 representatives from NATO Allied nations; NATO Partner nations across NATO partner frameworks, including: the Partnership for Peace (PfP); the Mediterranean Dialogue; Partners Across the Globe. We also enjoy the presence of representatives from the UN, the OSCE, GOs, NGOs and academic institutions.

We, at the CMDR COE, believe in an inclusive, transformative and capable CMDR and strive to provide, particularly through constructive partnerships, opportunities for such a collaborative collective approach. To anticipate the future means preparing to meet tomorrow’s challenges today”, stressed in his opening speech Col Orlin Nikolov, Director of CMDR COE.

All speakers at the conference praised the Serbija 2018 Exercise as an excellent example of cooperation between involved actors on terrain – a 2000-strong team of experts from about 40 NATO Allied and partner countries. By facilitating close interagency and cross-border actions, the exercise enabled NATO Allies and partners to practice disaster response mechanisms and to test capabilities essential for the effective management of emergency situations. The geologically and environmentally tailored earthquake scenario was also intended to contribute to strengthening Serbia’s national capacity to effectively coordinate international disaster response efforts.
