CMDR COE′s contribution to the largest UN exercise
Date: (07-04-2022)
CMDR COE provided 3 experts for support to the Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX) VIKING 22 as the aim was to train and educate participants - civilian, military and police – to meet the challenges of current and future multi-dimensional crisis response and peace operations. The multinational exercise, led by the Swedish Ministry of Defence, is in the spirit of NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme. This year more than 3500 participants trained in military and civilian cooperation in the multinational staff exercise, held in the period 30 March – 7 April 2022. It took place at sites in Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, Qatar and Sweden.
The exercise is a training platform to prepare civilians, military personnel and police officers to participate in peace promoting efforts.
CAX VIKING is the world’s largest UN peace operation exercise and has become an effective platform for multinational training around co-operation, coordination and concept development. The exercise started in 1999 “in the spirit of NATO’s Partnership for Peace” to foster interoperability between participating nations. The exercise concept focuses on developing civil-military relations and a comprehensive approach.
VIKING 22 scenario covered the deployment of a UN peace enforcement mission in the fictitious country Midland. An UN integrated HQ and two Sector HQs worked simultaneously and located in Sweden, Brazil and Qatar respectively. The scenario is based on the political and security challenges faced by certain countries in Africa such as Mali or the Central African Republic and built around cross-border threats to foster coordination between participating organisations VIKING 22 also played the deployment of a NATO crisis response operation (Small Joint) in the fictitious country of Southland, across the border from the UN Mission. A JTF HQ including CC level and five brigade HQs trained simultaneously in sites located in Bulgaria, Finland and Sweden.
